Two Edgbaston roads expose the fault. Westbound on the A456 Hagley Road towards Bearwood and the M5, and south on the A38 Bristol Road past the university, a car finally holds a steady cruise, and a wheel carrying uneven weight begins to hum through the rim and the seat. The causes sit closer to home: a tree-lined Calthorpe Estate kerb clipped in the dark, a weight flicked off by a Middleway pothole, a tyre refitted after a repair and never spun.
Nothing has to leave the drive. Corner by corner the car comes up on the jack, the wheel is unbolted, and the van's balancer spins it to find where the rim sits heavy and by what margin. Alloys take slim adhesive strips pressed inside the barrel; steel rims take weights clipped over the flange. A proving spin follows, then the nuts go back to the maker's torque figure. Balancing earns its keep when tyres are new, when one has been off the rim for a BS AU 159 patch, or when a weight has parted company with the rim. It cures nothing on a car that wanders toward the Harborne Road kerb while you hold the wheel straight, since that is a geometry fault, and Rescue Tyres does not do alignment.
