Skip lorries and builders' vans on Stanstead Road and Brownhill Road scatter screws along the A205; a clean one in the tread is patched from inside in a street off the South Circular.
Renovation traffic is the South Circular's puncture source. Houses in Forest Hill, Dulwich and East Sheen are forever being extended, and the skips, vans and pallets that serve them drop screws and nails into the gutter where cars pull over for buses. The light tends to come on crawling through Tulse Hill or Clapham, a mile later. Kerb strikes also cause slow leaks, but those damage the sidewall and cannot be patched, which is why the fitter checks the cause first.
In the side street the fitter unbolts the wheel, eases the tyre off the rim and traces the Stanstead Road screw through to the inner lining. BS AU 159 permits a repair only for a Forest Hill hole no wider than 6 mm lying in the middle three-quarters of the tread, and then a combined patch and plug is cured in place from inside. A kerb-cut sidewall or a tyre flattened all the way to Catford is replaced. The price is agreed when you phone.

A slow leak often turns up at a retail park: Bell Green Retail Park in Sydenham, Peninsular Retail Park near Charlton, or Stone Lake Retail Park. Stay parked and message us the row. If the damage is a nail in the tread, it is repaired on the spot to BS AU 159; a sidewall cut needs a new tyre.
With a skip-lorry screw in the tread, turn off into a Tulse Hill residential road and switch off. No sealant: aerosol foam gums up a Tulse Hill tyre from within and may make patching impossible. Find the screw and see whether it is edging towards the shoulder, where a repair stops being possible. Leave it in. The locking key is next. A residents' bay is fine if you are legal there; a red-route bus stop on the A205 is not.
