Most of what goes wrong here is picked up on ordinary local driving: the run down Pickhurst Lane to the shops, the pull out onto Croydon Road, the turn onto Baston Road. A screw or a kerb strike does the damage, the warning light comes on outside the house, and the car sits on the drive until somebody deals with it. That is the easiest sort of call to answer, because the vehicle is already parked somewhere a wheel can safely come off.

A driveway is the normal answer in Hayes and the one that keeps the job simple: level ground, no passing traffic, room to swing a bar. Without one, a quiet length of Pickhurst Lane away from the bends will serve, with the car set straight against the kerb. Parking at Hayes station belongs to the railway, so anything happening there rests on the operator being content with it. Shop bays along the parade are short stay and usually full. The carriageway of the A232 is not an option at any point.

Calls come from the streets either side of Hayes Street, from the roads reaching out towards Coney Hall and Keston Mark, and from addresses on the Park Langley and West Wickham fringes that belong properly to neither. BR2 covers nearly all of it, which makes the road name and house number more useful than the postcode on its own. Most houses have their own frontage, so the wheel usually comes off on a private drive with the van tucked in behind. With no drive available, a residential turning will serve, provided the car sits well back from any junction and is not wedged between two others. Croydon Road, the A232, is one to move away from rather than work beside, since it carries through traffic between West Wickham and Bromley.
