Hayes runs on vans. Between Caxton, Beaver, Dokal, Featherstone and the International Trading Estate, the district keeps a great deal of working traffic on the road, and it eats tyres: screws off a yard, a shoulder worn through on a loaded axle, a sidewall caught on a kerb turning into a bay. Cars get their share too, mostly from the Uxbridge Road and Dawley Road runs. The van arrives with the size already matched to the sidewall, and the wheel comes off wherever the vehicle is standing.

Yards on the trading estates are the best working ground in Hayes: level, hard and out of the traffic, with the occupier's permission being the only requirement. Driveways on the residential roads are next. A kerbside space on a side street works for a car, though not on Dawley Road or Station Road themselves where the traffic runs close. Lombardy Retail Park has room but its bays are for shoppers, so a short job only and the car left tidy. Nothing happens on the Parkway.

Three sorts of address account for the calls. The estates first: Caxton, Abenglen, Beaver, Dokal and the units around Bull's Bridge, where a yard gives the fitter room to work and the site usually has somebody to let the van in. Then the residential streets running off Dawley Road, North Hyde Road and Station Road, a mix of terraces at the kerb and semis with drives. Then Lombardy Retail Park and the supermarket frontages, which are fine for a car that has limped there but are short-stay, so tell the fitter where you are parked. The Parkway itself is not somewhere to stop at all. Hayes sits inside the ULEZ, which applies around the clock but never to a parked car.
