Tyre trouble in Hampstead?

A fitter at your car
in Hampstead.

The village is the awkward part. Roads around Hampstead High Street and Fitzjohn's Avenue are narrow, they slope, and they were laid out long before anyone thought of parking on them, which leaves a car with a flat very little room around it. What goes wrong is often kerb related: an alloy caught on a pinch point, a sidewall bruised against a granite edge, a tyre losing pressure overnight after a hard knock. The size off the sidewall and the postcode bring the right replacement.

What we do in Hampstead

Tyre work in Hampstead.

Everything is done alongside the car: a fresh tyre matched to the marking on the old one, mounted, balanced, pressures set, scrap casing taken away. A puncture in the middle band of tread is mended the way BS AU 159 requires, from the inner face, using a bonded plug and patch; a repair in the shoulder is not permitted and will not be attempted. A tyre that has burst gets replaced, the rim inspected for damage before anything goes back on. A vanished locking key does not stop the nut being taken off. Calls are answered around the clock.

Repairs follow BS AU 159; the legal minimum tread is 1.6mm (GOV.UK).

For the wider area, see mobile tyre fitting across Camden; Hampstead is covered the same way.

Services from the Camden page: 24 hour tyre repair · Puncture repair · 24 hour tyre service · Burst tyre replacement · Emergency tyre repair.

Where we work in Hampstead

Drives, bays and car parks.

A private drive is the best surface in Hampstead and the older houses off Fitzjohn's Avenue and Spaniards Road often have one. Failing that, the flattest permit bay within reach, car parallel and the pavement side clear to work from. Jack Straw's car park, provided the operator agrees, is where to meet when the car can still be driven. Not usable: the climb of Heath Street and Rosslyn Hill, the pinched stretch past Hampstead High Street where a stopped van halts the road, and the hospital grounds by Pond Street, which are the hospital's to control.

The cover takes in the roads off Rosslyn Hill and Fitzjohn's Avenue, Pond Street and Constantine Road on the B518 near the Royal Free, and houses along Spaniards Road towards the Heath. Two things shape the job. The ground rarely lies flat, so a fitter hunts out the most level stretch within reach and uses chocks where the camber works against him. And the streets are tight: Camden bays up here are short, well enforced and often suspended, so the bay number and zone have to come with the call. Jack Straw's car park on North End Way is public and takes any car that still drives. All of NW3 lies within the ULEZ, a scheme that charges movement and ignores a parked car.

If the car is parked in Belsize Park or Swiss Cottage rather than Hampstead, the booking works the same way.

Nights and weekends

24 hours in Hampstead.

Night work up here can be a resident who has come home, parked on a bay and found a tyre soft, or somebody due out on the road early with a nail sitting in the tread. The phone is answered at whatever time it rings, the tyre named from a photograph, and nothing is charged that was not said out loud first.

Hampstead FAQs

Questions from Hampstead.

Can a wheel come off on Heath Street or Rosslyn Hill?
Neither is suitable. Both climb, both are narrow, and a van stopping beside a car would hold up everything behind it. If the car still rolls, bring it to a level turning nearby. If it will not, tell us and chocks come out on arrival.
Is Jack Straw's car park somewhere we could meet?
It is public, it is on North End Way, and there is space to open doors and lift a wheel clear. Any car able to drive itself there can be met there. For one that cannot move, the work happens where it already stands instead.
Can you repair a puncture while I am at the Royal Free?
Not inside the hospital grounds without the hospital's say so. The residential streets off Pond Street and Constantine Road are close by and quiet enough, so move the car there once you are free and ring from it.
Are the Camden bays in Hampstead village usable for this?
They generally are, provided your permit covers the bay and no suspension notice has gone up. Bays here are short, so mention how much room sits in front and behind, and a fitter will know whether the van can pull in alongside.
