In Southside a flat tyre usually reveals itself in a car park. Someone leaves the car for the evening near New Street, walks back to NCP Horsefair or NCP Gough Street, and finds one corner sitting low. The rest come in off Bristol Street and Suffolk Street Queensway, which carry the A38 past the district. A level bay is workable, and the phone call settles how the kit reaches it, by van up the ramp or carried by hand from the street.

Drives, bays and car parks.

A level bay in one of Southside's big public car parks is the usual working surface. Grand Central Parking suits a driver who arrived by train and came back to a problem. Pay-and-display spaces in the side streets are fine while the ticket runs. Taxi ranks, bus stops, loading bays and the station approaches are not usable, and nor is a bay so cramped that the flat wheel cannot be pulled clear of the arch.

B5 covers most of Southside, with B1 and B2 on the edges nearer the core, and the Chinese Quarter lies within it. Calls come from the car parks first: Dudley Street Car Park, Edgbaston Street Car Park and the two NCP sites at Horsefair and Gough Street. After that come people who live in the district and park on its streets, and drivers who stopped once they felt the tyre go on the A38. Suffolk Street Queensway and the Queensway Tunnel are not places to stop, and Bristol Street is too busy to jack a car at the kerb. The Belgrave and Lee Bank stretches of the Middleway form the ring road on this side, and inside that ring Birmingham's Clean Air Zone applies to non-compliant cars on the move. Parked and waiting for a fitter, a car is charged nothing.
