Here the station sets the pattern. A commuter parks near Luton station at breakfast time and returns after dark to a tyre sitting soft, and the terraced streets above it are parked so closely that a sidewall gets scuffed every time somebody squeezes in. The A6 loop round the edge, Guildford Street into Hucklesby Way, adds its share of screws and glass. Read out the sidewall size and give the terrace name when you ring, and the van leaves Brent Cross with that tyre already aboard.

Drives, bays and car parks.

A resident bay outside the house works well when the kerb side is clear. Driveways are scarce in these terraces, so most wheels come off in the street with the van pulled in alongside. The public car parks at Crawley Road and Vicarage Street give a level surface and space to swing a jack; tell the fitter the bay you are in. The A6 kerbs and any loading bay are not workable surfaces, however short the job looks.

Most calls come from the terraces between the station and Hart Hill, from the flats nearer the A6, and from people who arrive by train and find the car sagging where they left it. High Town falls inside the controlled parking around central Luton, so expect to be asked whether the car occupies a resident bay and whether the permit covers it. A car on a narrow terrace needs room on the damaged side; if it is jammed against the next bumper, rolling it a few yards first helps. Mill Street and Hucklesby Way carry the A6 and nobody works on them. Crawley Road Car Park and the Vicarage Street car park are public options for a car that still rolls, and the Luton station car park suits a commuter who would rather not drive on the tyre at all.
