Birmingham blowouts cluster on the quick roads: the A38(M) into the centre, the M6 around Spaghetti Junction and the M42 from J3 to J6. The Aston Expressway has no hard shoulder, so a driver whose tyre lets go there must hold the wheel firmly, ease off rather than stamp on the brake as the car pulls, and roll on slowly to Salford CirM42 or Dartmouth Circus. On the M6 or M42 the target is the next junction or services, never a halt on the carriageway.

Once the car has stopped on an ordinary street clear of the A38(M), put the hazard lights on first. Everyone leaves by the doors on the pavement side, and if the car is stranded on the M6 or M42 and cannot move, climb behind the crash barrier and call 999 from there. Nobody walks along the carriageway hunting for tread. Driving on the bare rim, even to reach Aston, wrecks the wheel. After the new tyre goes on, the fitter examines that rim and the other three tyres.
