A tyre with a bulge, a split, a deep cut or cord showing cannot be repaired. We replace it at the car, on your drive, outside your home or in a car park where the owner allows the work.
BS AU 159, the British Standard for tyre repairs, allows a repair only in the central part of the tread and only for small holes. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder, a bulge, a split or exposed cord is outside what the standard allows, so the answer is a new tyre.
With the tyre off, the fitter looks at the rim for cracks, bends or chunks missing and tells you what was found. We do not repair wheels.
A hard knock can also upset the wheel alignment. We do not do alignment, so if the car pulls to one side or the steering wheel sits off centre afterwards, have it checked at a garage that does.

We never work on the M1, at J11a or on the A5505 link road carriageway or slip roads: if the tyre failed there, follow the Highway Code and call your breakdown cover, and we can meet the car once it is somewhere safe.
The size is moulded into the sidewall as a line such as 205/55 R16 91V. Reading it out on the call, or sending a photo of it on WhatsApp, is the most useful thing you can do before the fitter sets off.

Elsewhere on the sidewall, at the end of the DOT code, is a four-digit date code such as 2423, which means the tyre was made in the 24th week of 2023. Tyres age even when they are not used, so an old spare is worth checking before it is relied on.
