Shaking at speed in Wellingborough? Balance the wheels where the car is parked.

Most Wellingborough journeys use the A45 dual carriageway, west to Northampton and the M1 or east past Little Irchester to Rushden, or the A509 north to the A14. Those are long, steady stretches where a small imbalance shows as a shake through the steering or a buzz in the floor. Roundabout kerbs on the way out of town, and parking against kerbs in Queensway or Hemmingwell, can strip a weight from a rim, while any new tyre fitted without balancing does the same.

Every tyre that is fitted, repaired or taken off its rim should be balanced, and so should any Wellingborough wheel missing its weight or recently thumped by a kerb. Balancing is not alignment

A shake is not always a balance fault. Pulling towards one side on the A509, or front tyres worn on a single edge, points to the tracking, which a garage must set because our van carries no alignment gear. A tyre with a bulge from a pothole, a buckled alloy or a tyre that has worn out of round will vibrate regardless of weights. The balancer shows those too, so the fitter can tell you the real cause rather than add weights for nothing.
