Driveways are scarce in this grid, so a soft tyre usually announces itself on a resident bay at seven in the morning. Stopping is barred on Hoe Street and on Forest Road, both red routes, which closes off the limp to a garage and the handy lay-by in one go. Look at the sidewall, read out the code, say which street you are on and which end, then the tyre that matches rides out with the fitter.

Drives, bays and car parks.

Nine times out of ten the job happens in whichever resident bay the car was left in, fitter alongside. Houses on the fringe of the Village sometimes have off-street space, better again. Should the car still drive, Bedford Road Car Park or Mission Grove Car Park offer elbow room a terraced street never will, ticket bought and the site told what is happening. Sainsbury's bays belong to Sainsbury's and permission is theirs to give. The one setup that defeats everybody is a gap too narrow to get beside the damaged wheel.

The streets between Hoe Street and Walthamstow Central produce most of it, then the terraces towards St James's Street and Markhouse Road, then flats over by Blackhorse Road. Outsiders misread the modal filters: they prevent a car crossing the Village, not entering it, so each street keeps an open end, and knowing the street name is how a fitter picks the right approach. Orford Road is nobody's route through. Permit control covers nearly every kerb around here, which matters not at all when a car is being worked on in its own bay. Barred, though, is the running surface of Hoe Street, of Forest Road, of Lea Bridge Road. ULEZ takes in E17 around the clock; a car jacked up in its own bay pays nothing into it.
