Most flats round here are picked up on the A23. London Road and Thornton Road carry lorries down towards Croydon all day, and whatever they shed ends up in the nearside lane. The tyre then goes down on Brigstock Road or on a residential street off Green Lane, which is where the phone call comes from. Quote the size from the sidewall, say which road and which postcode, and the matching tyre travels with the van rather than being ordered afterwards.

Drives, bays and car parks.

Off-street parking exists here but it is not the rule: plenty of houses open straight onto the pavement. Where there is a drive, the car stays on it. Where there is not, a marked bay on a side street off Parchmore Road or Green Lane is fine provided nothing is parked hard against the bumper. The Lidl and Iceland car parks will take a car that still drives, once somebody in the store knows about it. What cannot be used is the A23 itself: London Road and Thornton Road carry too much traffic to stand at a wheel.

The calls split three ways: the houses on Parchmore Road, Green Lane and the streets off Brigstock Road, where parking is tight and a car often sits nose to tail with the next one. Trade vehicles on Thornton Road Industrial Estate, Brookmead Industrial Estate and the yards along Beddington Lane, which have the space a van needs. And drivers stopped near Thornton Heath station or the shops on the High Street, where bays are marked and a warden comes past. A fitter needs the length of the car plus room to stand at the wheel, so a resident's bay with a gap behind it works and a double yellow on the A23 does not. Grange Road and Whitehorse Road, both A212, are through routes offering nowhere sensible to stop. Every street here is inside the ULEZ, though nothing is charged for a car that stays parked.
