Shopping streets and a busy station make for a particular kind of tyre problem. Delivery vans double park along the High Street, cars swing into kerbs on Portland Road, and a sidewall scuffed hard against a high kerb will let go days later on the A213. Drop-in traffic from Penge Road and Croydon Road adds the nails. When you call, the sidewall size plus the road name are enough for the right tyre to be loaded before the van leaves.

Drives, bays and car parks.

Off-street space is the easy version: a drive up the hill, a hardstanding behind a front wall, room enough to open the boot and get the spare out. On the street, look for a bay on a residential turning rather than anywhere on the A213 or A215. An estate yard at Franklin Industrial Estate suits a works van. What does not suit anyone is the loading frontage on the High Street, where the car would be in the way of everything else.

The addresses split between the flats and terraces close to Norwood Junction, where every space is spoken for, and the bigger houses climbing South Norwood Hill, where drives are common. Anything on the A213 itself, High Street through to Penge Road, is a through route and no place for a jack; the turnings either side of it are. Portland Road is the same story. The tram stops at Harrington Road and Birkbeck bring their own trade, drivers who park and ride and come back to a flat tyre. The Aldi car park takes a car that can still be driven if the store is told. Everything here falls inside the ULEZ, which costs nothing while a car sits still, and the SE25 postcode covers the lot.
