Two things define tyre work up here. One is the A205, which runs past as Dulwich Common and Thurlow Park Road and is no place to stand beside a jacked car. The other is the gradient: the roads climbing off Croxted Road and Dulwich Wood Park are steep enough that where the car is parked matters as much as what is wrong with it. A tyre that picks something up on the South Circular is usually found flat later, at home, on the level.

Off-street parking is common on this side of the hill and it is by far the best answer, since the car stays private, level and out of traffic. On the roads themselves the fitter wants a flat length of kerb rather than a slope, and will chock the wheels that stay down before the jack goes under. Knight's Hill and Norwood Road are too busy to be sensible. Parking beside West Dulwich station is railway land, so the operator has to agree before a van can work in it.

Callers here are spread between SE21 and SE27, which is worth establishing at the start because the two run together on this hill. The bulk of them are houses off Croxted Road, South Croxted Road and the roads towards Dulwich Wood Park, most with somewhere to park off the street, and that is what makes this an easy hill to work on. Commuters ring from around West Dulwich and Sydenham Hill stations, having found a tyre down on the walk back. What nobody does is stop on Dulwich Common or Thurlow Park Road, where the South Circular carries traffic both ways with no safe gap alongside. No public car park sits up here to fall back on. The ULEZ covers all of this and charges a car at rest nothing.
