Almost every car in this pocket of SW8 is parked on the street, and almost every street is a controlled bay, so a flat becomes a parking problem before it becomes a tyre problem. Nobody wants to drive a deflated wheel over Vauxhall Bridge hunting for a garage. Better to leave the car in the bay it is legally occupying, ring with the road name plus whatever size is stamped on the sidewall, and let the fitter come to it.

A resident bay the car is entitled to use is the normal answer, with the permit or the phone session kept live until the work finishes. Estate parking around Kennington Cross and the Peabody Estate side is quieter and gives the fitter room. A supermarket bay can work if the store does not mind and the car sits well away from the entrance. Off limits: the A202 at Vauxhall Bridgefoot, the A3204 through Durham Street, and anywhere a stopped vehicle would block a bus.

The calls come off the streets between Kennington Lane and the Oval, the terraces along South Lambeth Road, and the blocks towards Kennington Cross and the Pullens Estate. Firms on the Valmar Trading Estate and at Burgess Business Park ring about vans. Bays are the working surface, since public car parks are thin on the ground in this pocket, and the fitter parks alongside and works from the kerb side. The A3 at Clapham Road and Kennington Park Road is another matter: red route restrictions, buses and no chance of jacking anything. Harleyford Road and Parry Street are much the same.
