N18 and N9 carry more working vehicles than most of north London, and it shows in the tyres. Kerbed sidewalls from loading bays, screws and bandings picked up on estate roads, slow punctures that only declare themselves once the van is loaded to its plate. The Great Cambridge Road and the North Circular account for the rest, since a pothole taken at speed on either will knock a wheel out of true. Best of all is yard space at a unit: hard standing, room to move round the vehicle, and nobody driving past your elbow. After that a driveway, then the kerb outside the address with the car parked square. A loading bay is not a surface to work in, because somebody else will need it. Centre and retail park bays need permission from whoever runs them. Anything on the dual carriageway is a non-starter, and so is a spot that leaves the fitter kneeling in a live traffic lane.

Work comes from all over: the terraces off Fore Street and The Broadway, the blocks around Silver Street and Edmonton Green, the houses up Hedge Lane towards Palmers Green, and above all the estates. Eley, Great Cambridge, Rosebery, Lockwood, Leeside and Compass West between them hold a great many vans, and a unit yard is about the best surface this work can have: flat, private and out of the traffic. Street parking around Edmonton Green and Fore Street is controlled and busy, so the bay you are in matters. Shopping centre and retail park bays at Edmonton Green, Ravenside and Cork Tree are private land, so the operator decides and not us. The North Circular carriageway is out of the question.
