Carshalton splits neatly for a fitter. North of the A232, towards The Wrythe and Hackbridge, the calls come off the Wandle Trading Estate and the streets around it, where work vehicles live. South, up through Carshalton Beeches and Carshalton-on-the-Hill, it is family cars on driveways with the odd kerbed alloy picked up on the turns by the Ponds. Both are worked on where they stand, with the size read off the sidewall before anyone sets off.

Drives, bays and car parks.

Driveways take most of the work in Carshalton and they are generally wide enough that nothing has to be shuffled about. Where a house has none, The Square, Shotfield Car Park or the station parking give a bay to work in. Trading estate yards off Willow Lane suit vans and anything heavy. What will not do is the A232 kerb beside the Ponds, a bay on a bend on Carshalton Park Road, or a spot where the offside wheel sits in moving traffic.

SM5 covers the older centre by the Ponds, Carshalton station just north of it, and the long residential streets running out to The Wrythe and Carshalton Beeches, while part of SM1 laps over from Sutton New Town. Driveways are common away from the centre and are where most tyres get fitted. The Square Carshalton and Shotfield Car Park take cars that are already out of the house. Carshalton Road, Pound Street and Acre Lane, all the A232, carry the traffic between Sutton and Wallington and are best left before stopping. St Helier Hospital is a short run north and its car parks come up often. Willow Lane Industrial Estate and the yards towards Beddington give room for van work. Everything here is inside the ULEZ.
