BS AU 159, the British Standard for tyre repairs, allows a repair only in the central part of the tread and only for small holes. Damage to the sidewall or the shoulder, a bulge, a split or exposed cord is outside what the standard allows, so the answer is a new tyre.
Tell us the size from the sidewall of the damaged tyre or the one opposite it. Common sizes are often on the van; other sizes are sourced for the job. If the tyre on the other side of the same axle is well worn, fitting a pair keeps the grip even, and we will say so rather than leave you with a mismatched axle.
If the damage came from hitting a kerb, look at the wheel too. A bent or cracked rim cannot be put right by a new tyre, so mention it on the call. We do not do wheel alignment; if the steering pulls afterwards, have the alignment checked.
The size is moulded into the sidewall as a line such as 205/55 R16 91V. Reading it out on the call, or sending a photo of it on WhatsApp, is the most useful thing you can do before the fitter sets off.
