Damaged tyre replacement in Bexley

A tyre with a cut, a bulge, a split or cord showing cannot be repaired. It has to be replaced, and we fit the new tyre where the car is parked, with the wheel checked at the same time.

Bexley is about 18 miles in a straight line from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2. We give you an arrival time when you call.

Damaged tyre

Is it safe to drive on a damaged tyre?

  • A bulge or lump in the sidewall means the cords inside have broken, and the tyre can fail without warning. Do not drive on it, except slowly to the nearest safe place off the road.
  • Cord or wire showing anywhere on the tyre: do not drive on it, except slowly to the nearest safe place off the road.
  • A split in the sidewall, or a cut deep enough to reach the cords, means a new tyre. BS AU 159 allows repairs only in the central part of the tread, so sidewall and shoulder damage cannot be repaired.
  • A light kerb scuff with no bulge, no cut into the rubber and no cord showing may be cosmetic. The fitter will look and tell you honestly.

Under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986, a tyre must not be used on the road if it has a cut longer than 25 mm, or 10 percent of the section width if that is greater, deep enough to reach the ply or cord; a lump, bulge or tear caused by the structure separating; or any ply or cord exposed.

What the job includes

  • A look at the damage, from a photo on WhatsApp if you can send one
  • A new tyre in the right size, load index and speed rating
  • The wheel checked for damage from the same impact
  • Wheel balanced and nuts tightened to the maker's setting
  • The old tyre taken away
Where we can work

Replacing it where the car is parked

The fitter takes the wheel off, fits a new tyre of the correct size, load index and speed rating, balances the wheel and refits it. While the wheel is off, the rim is checked: a knock hard enough to damage a tyre can also bend or crack an alloy, and a new tyre may not seal or run true on a damaged wheel. If the wheel looks damaged, you are told before anything is fitted. We do not repair wheels.

Tyres on the same axle should be the same size and type. If the tyre on the other side is badly worn, the fitter will tell you and you decide.

Before you call

What to have ready when you call

Common sizes are often on the van; other sizes are sourced for the job. The price depends on the size and the tyre you choose. You hear it on the call before anything is booked, and the price is the same at any hour.

  • The size from the sidewall, for example 205/55 R16 91V. If the damaged tyre is unreadable, use the tyre on the other side of the same axle.
  • What the damage looks like: a bulge, a cut, a split or cord showing.
  • Where the car is: a postcode, a street name or a car park name.
  • Whether the car has locking wheel nuts, and where the key is.
On the road

Red routes, permit bays and ULEZ

The A2 through the borough is a red route. We cannot stop or work on a red route; the car needs to be on a side street or private ground first.

If the car is in a controlled parking zone permit bay, tell us so the fitter can park legally beside it. The area is inside the London-wide Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), in force since 29 August 2023: a charge for driving a vehicle that does not meet its emission standards, not for a parked car.

We never work on the carriageway of a motorway or main road, on a hard shoulder, in a smart motorway emergency area or on a slip road. If the tyre lets you do so safely, move the car to a side road or a car park first; if not, call your breakdown cover.

Tyre types

Run-flat tyres

Many newer cars, especially some BMW and MINI models, leave the factory on run-flat tyres and carry no spare wheel. The sidewall says so, with a marking such as RSC, ROF, SSR, ZP or RFT depending on the maker.

A car built for run-flats should stay on run-flats, because it has no spare to fall back on and its suspension is set up for their stiffer sidewalls. Tell us on the call if the car has them, so the right tyre is sourced.

Step by step

From your call to the finished job

→

Tell us what happened

Call or WhatsApp with where the car is, the registration and the tyre size from the sidewall. A photo of the damage helps find the right replacement.

→

Agree what happens next

You hear what the job involves and the options for your car. Nothing is booked until you say yes.

→

Work at the car

The fitter comes to your home, your workplace or a safe place to park, raises the car on a jack and does the job beside it.

Checked before the fitter leaves

Before the fitter leaves, the wheel is checked for security and the tyre pressure is set to the maker's figure.

Pricing

How the price is worked out

There is no fixed figure that suits every car, so the price is built from a few things and told to you before you decide.

The price is the same at any hour. Asking for a price does not commit you to anything.

When you compare prices, compare like with like: the same brand and pattern, the same load index and speed rating, and whether balancing and a new valve are part of the job.

What goes into the price

  • The tyre itself: size, load index, speed rating and whether it is a run-flat
  • The tier you choose: budget, mid-range or premium
  • The work: a repair, one new tyre or several, and any locking nut removal
  • The location of the car

Questions

Questions and answers

Can the fitter work in a hospital, station or retail park car park?

Yes, if the site allows it. Supermarket, retail park and station car parks are private ground, so the owner's permission comes first. Places of this kind in this area include:

  • Bexleyheath Broadway shopping centre
  • Queen Mary's Hospital at Sidcup
  • Sidcup station
  • Erith Riverside Shopping Centre
  • Bexleyheath station
Do I need to replace both tyres on the axle?
Not always. If the other tyre on that axle has good tread and is the same size and pattern, one new tyre can be enough.
Will the wheel be damaged too?
It can be. The rim is inspected with the tyre off, and you are told if it is bent or cracked before the new tyre is fitted.
Can I claim for pothole damage?
You may be able to claim from the council or the authority that looks after the road. Note the location, photograph the pothole and the tyre, and keep the receipt.
Can you work on the street outside my house?
Yes, if it is legal to park there and the car is not blocking traffic. A quiet residential street is usually fine; a busy main road or a red route is not.
How soon can the fitter get to me?
It depends on how far the car is from our only base at Brent Cross, NW2, and on the jobs already booked.
Are you insured?
Yes. Rescue Tyres is fully insured, has fitted more than 2,000 tyres and is a UK registered company.
Can you fit tyres at my workplace?
Yes, if the site is happy for the work to be done there and there is room around the wheel. Tell us the address and where the car is parked on site.
