A lost key or seized locking wheel nut can stop you changing a tyre entirely, but the wheel can still come off safely with the right tools. Specialist extraction sockets grip the nut where an ordinary socket can't, so it can be removed without damaging the alloy or the stud.
Why locking nuts cause trouble
- Lost key. The unique key is missing, common with used cars.
- Rounded key or nut. Over-tightening (often by a garage's air gun) chews up the pattern.
- Seized or corroded. Rust welds the nut in place over time.
- Snapped key. The plastic-cased keys can break under force.
How removal works
A fitter uses a master set or a dedicated extraction tool that bites into the nut and turns it out without harming the wheel. Once it's off, you can replace the locking nuts with standard ones, or a fresh locking set if you prefer. It's a job many garages won't attempt at the roadside, but a specialist mobile fitter can.
Don't force it yourself
Improvised attempts often round the nut further or damage the alloy and stud, turning a small job into an expensive one. If the key won't engage cleanly, stop and get it done properly.
