A screw found at midnight on a Nunhead street does not mean a new tyre by morning. It means the puncture can be repaired overnight, at the car, by the night fitter.
A puncture found late in Southwark can announce itself on the way home: the pressure light coming on along the South Circular into East Dulwich, a hiss outside a Nunhead terrace after the last train from London Bridge, a tyre gone soft on a Sydenham Hill drive at 11pm. Because it is dark, people assume a replacement. A screw in the tread's middle band is every bit as patchable at 1am as at midday, and the patch is the smaller, lasting job.

Turn into a side road towards Queens Road Peckham station or Nunhead station, or park near Clayton Road.
