Most Ward End tyre calls start at home. The car went down overnight on a street near the park, or a nail collected somewhere on Stechford Road finally lets go on the school run. With plenty of houses set back behind short drives, the job is usually straightforward. The fitter checks the tyre, repairs it when the damage allows, and otherwise fits a replacement to the size printed on the sidewall, without the car moving from outside the house.

A driveway, first and foremost, and much of Ward End has them. Without one, pick a residential side road and leave the car flush to the kerb. The Tesco car park is a fair alternative if the tyre will hold for the drive round. A grass verge beside the park will not hold a jack, and the Outer Circle carriageway, bus stops and yellow lines on a corner are not usable either.

Ward End spreads out from the park to the A4040 Stechford Lane along one edge. Calls come from the avenues around the park, from homes along Stechford Road and from the streets towards Alum Rock and Washwood Heath. Many houses have a drive, the best surface a fitter can ask for. Where cars are kept on the road, a kerbside job works as long as the street is quiet enough. The Outer Circle is another matter: Stechford Lane and Bromford Lane carry heavy traffic and buses, so nothing is done at their kerbs. Stechford station is close, and commuters sometimes find a flat waiting there in the evening. Ward End sits well outside the Clean Air Zone.
