Tyre trouble in E16 arrives off the big roads and gets discovered on a small one. Newham Way carries port and through traffic past the top of the district, shedding enough grit, glass and scrap metal to keep the trade busy, and the load comes home to bays on Prince Regent Lane and the streets around Custom House station. The car need not move again; the tyre travels to the bay instead.

Street bays and estate parking take nearly all of it, with a yard or loading area for a van. The fitter wants level tarmac and a clear space behind the car, which a residents' bay usually provides. Beckton Retail Park is the fallback for anything that can still be driven that far. Exhibition, hotel and station parking around the Royal Docks is private ground with rules of its own, so it is no meeting point to rely on, and the dock roads themselves are too busy to work beside.

The calls are mostly residents' cars on street bays and in the parking around the blocks, plus working vehicles from the units towards Silvertown and the Greenshields Industrial Estate. Very little of Custom House has a private drive, so the normal job is a kerbside one, the car untouched in its own space, which is why the useful thing to say on the phone is the street, the bay and whether anything is parked hard behind. The A13 Newham Way is a red route and nothing at all happens on it. The same goes for Connaught Roundabout and the dock approaches. Everything here is inside the ULEZ, which is billed on driving and not on a wheel change.
