Tyre trouble in Highgate?

A fitter at your car
in Highgate.

Two things shape a tyre job in N6, the slope and the width. Southwood Lane, Muswell Hill Road and the smaller turnings off North Road are parked on both sides and go uphill, so a wheel gets scuffed against the kerb while somebody edges past an oncoming car. The tyre may hold for a week before it lets go outside the house. Name the road and read off the size moulded round the sidewall; the right one travels up the hill in the van.

What we do in Highgate

Tyre work in Highgate.

In N6 a puncture is often collected on the flat and only felt on the hill. The wheel is lifted clear, the bead broken, and the casing judged from the liner inwards. A repair is permitted through the central portion of the tread, up to six millimetres, and refused at the shoulder or the sidewall: that is BS AU 159, and it is not negotiable. Otherwise a fresh tyre answering the car's own markings, a burst one swapped and the rim given a look, and a locking nut taken off where no key exists for it.

Repairs follow BS AU 159; the legal minimum tread is 1.6mm (GOV.UK).

For the wider area, see mobile tyre fitting across Haringey; Highgate is covered the same way.

Where we work in Highgate

Drives, bays and car parks.

A driveway, for the houses that have one, and a good many up here do. Otherwise a resident bay on the flattest turning within reach, car nose-in to the kerb, fitter working off the pavement. Summerland Gardens has a public car park, if permitted, that suits a vehicle already out and about, and there is parking near Kenwood House at the Hampstead Lane end. The East Finchley station car park, if permitted, is the other honest option. What does not work is Archway Road itself, or any lane narrow enough that a stopped car blocks both directions at once.

The round follows the spine of the place: the houses on North Hill and North Road, the turnings off Southwood Lane, the streets running down towards Shepherd's Hill and Crouch End, and the properties on Hampstead Lane towards Kenwood. Highgate station sits in the cutting below the road, so drivers often park on the streets near it and walk down. Level ground is the real constraint here, more than parking is. A jack wants a surface near enough flat, and much of N6 is anything but, so the fitter will sometimes ask you to roll the car twenty feet to a better spot. Archway Road, the A1 at the bottom of the hill, is a red route on a gradient and no place for any of this.

Not quite in Highgate? We also come out to Fortis Green and Muswell Hill.

A late call from Highgate might be one of two things. One is a driver who has climbed Archway Road on a failing tyre and turned into the first side street. The other is a resident setting off early who finds a wheel flat at the kerb. Anyone ringing gets an answer, the tyre is matched against your car, and the figure is settled on that same call.

Highgate FAQs

Questions from Highgate.

The name Highgate turns up all over the country. Do you cover this one?
This is Highgate N6 in north London, the one on the ridge above Archway Road with the station down in the cutting. That is the one covered, along with the streets running off North Hill and Southwood Lane and down towards Shepherd's Hill.
My street is too steep to jack a car. What happens then?
The fitter looks for the nearest flat ground rather than chance it. That might be a few doors along, a level turning off North Road, or the Summerland Gardens car park, if the operator agrees. Mention the slope when you ring so the plan is made before anyone sets off.
Can you meet me at Highgate station instead of the house?
The station sits below the road in a cutting and the parking near it is street parking, not a car park, so a bay on a level turning nearby is the better arrangement. Say which street and which house number, and the car gets found.
Does a car on run-flats need anything different?
Run-flats are sourced against the same code on the sidewall as any other tyre and go on at the car in the usual way. Tell the fitter the vehicle is on run-flats when you ring, because the matching replacement needs loading before anyone sets out.
