A screw spotted in the tread as a Heartlands shift ends at midnight need not cost a new tyre. The puncture is repaired in the car park or on the street in the small hours.
Out-of-hours repair is about catching the tyre while it is still worth saving. Leave a slow leak on Belchers Lane overnight and it may be on the rim by morning, and a drive to a garage on it ruins the casing. A fitter at the car during the night can patch a hole that would otherwise become a replacement. Call with the size, the location and roughly when the tyre started losing air. With the van's lamps on the wheel, the fitter removes it, finds the object and checks the liner. A hole under 6 mm within the middle band receives a bonded patch-plug. If it falls outside the standard, that is explained beside the car on Belchers Lane, and a replacement can follow that night or another day. The repair cost, no higher at night, is confirmed before the fitter leaves.

A late-night puncture near Duddeston station or Saltley Gate is best handled in a quiet side road with streetlights. Avoid stopping on Nechells Parkway, the A47, while traffic is flowing. Give the station or junction as your reference point, and mention whether the car has a spare wheel, a repair kit or neither.
